Practical Psalms
The Legacy of Saint Paisios of Mount Athos and his spiritual father Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian
Reading the Psalms is the best medicine for a troubled mind. Saint Paisios of Mount Athos gave us a guideline on how to pray with the Psalms, based on the tradition preserved by his spiritual father, Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian. I humbly offer a short version here, suitable for the ever-rushing modern man.
Old prayers, like quality code, always compile nicely. Have you noticed? You repeat an ancient prayer, and it works. “Rise up, O Lord! Let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before You.” And the demons are gone.

Beginning
Every cry for help to God should begin with Psalm 51 (Псалом 501), regardless of the subject:
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. …

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.
The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

The end (important)
You should always finish with this prayer:
It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos, ever-blessed and most blameless, and Mother of our God. More honourable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
